Beginner's Guide to Penturning-Basic Steps Involved

Hello fellow woodworkers! If you are interested in penturning and want to learn about the process, then here is a list of the basic steps. Keep in mind, this is a basic list and there are more details involved that you can learn about later. Here is just a brief rundown of the main steps:

1. Preparing the pen blanks- First you need to gather your materials. After choosing a pen blank you need to drill it and glue in the tubes from the pen kit. Next you need to sand the edges down flush with the tube.

2. Getting the lathe ready- Put the pen blanks on the mandrel and put that into the lathe. Don't forget to put the bushings in the correct locations. Tighten the mandreal into the lathe, but be careful not to overtighten it.

3. Turning the blanks- Use your chosen turning tools and slowly carve down the blanks to size. You will know when to stop because the bushings should be even with the blanks. Stop carving when the blanks are just a tiny bit thicker than the bushings.

4. Final Sanding- Use sandpaper to smooth the pen blanks. Start while the lathe is turning, but then turn it off and sand along the grain. Do this procedure for ascending grits of sandpaper.

5. Finishing the blanks- There are many methods to finish the pen. Friction polishes are popular and easy to apply. To make a durable, shiny coat then a lot of people use a mixture of CA glue and boiled linseed oil.

6. Assembly- Take the blanks off the lathe and assemble the pen kit. You do not need any specil tools to do this.

Again, this is just a basic run-down of the steps and you will find that there is more involved with each step. However, there really are only these 6 basic steps so you can see that it is not overly difficult to make a pen. Good luck and happy turning!
